If this show is not a bundle of joy and hope, then what is?
Hello, hello, how are you doing? Whether you’ve been mentally living in the good old 2010s or in the nightmarish year of 2020, we all need a breather every now and then and what better(and safe!)way than to burrito yourself in a blanket on a pandemic Sunday and watch an inspiring & heart warming drama.
“Diary of a Future President” opens on a busy day for the United States, as they elect a very deserving civil rights attorney and congress woman Elena Cañero-Reed as their new president. As Elena gears up for her first day, she receives her old diary from her mother. A diary which becomes the plot of the show as it swims through the exciting life of the12 year old future president. Elena just enters middle school with a load of enthusiasm to discover herself and her little society. She loves her academics and hates forgetting an assignment. She also loves her BFFAESNSOTBFBU(find out what that is on the show),Sasha. Young Ms. Cañero-Reed is never afraid to question the wrong or to take it upon herself to change things for the better. She is confident and owns it ,even when she has to go to her middle school dance with a moustache!
But, little future president doesn’t have it all figured out. She navigates the confusing, bitter-at-times stages of growing up with the help of her hard working mom- lawyer Gabriella ,her brother Bobby who is an eighth grader, the pun guy -Sam who joins the family as her mom’s love interest and of course with the help of writing things down in her diary which Elena’s dad gifts her before he passes away.
With inspiration coming from within and around, Elena tackles many curveballs, like cooking up a last minute presentation on world war II or so called “trying to keep her place in the family”! She also collects a hundred signatures for her petition to change their school’s mascot from a discriminative , unethical old guy to something more meaningful but whether she succeeded in the quest is an interesting topic on the show. From correcting her mistakes and regaining friends to fighting for inclusivity, we follow her engrossing sixth grade journey. Of course, her family goes through their own share of learnings, but it is all inter related as it is in real life.
We all have a little Elena, Gabriella ,Bobby and Sam in us and the story inspires us to face our fears, chase our dreams and be there for each other.
In entirety, the show is very much fun and well written. All the characters are competently developed and wonderfully portrayed by the cast, especially Tess Romero who played the lead. The first season of 10 episodes created by Ilana Peña, produced by “Jane the Virgin” fame Gina Rodriguez in association with CBS studios is available on Disney+hotstar .
So what are you waiting for, go give it a watch!
